As Purity Ring, Megan James and Corin Roddick have demonstrated an atypical flair for a specific, off-kilter brand of synthpop that embraces weirdness and utilizes it as their weapon. The duo’s 2012 debut Shrines was a perfect example of that, as they cultivated a unique sound into a prodigious and acclaimed project.
Purity’s Ring’s new single, “Push Pull”, returns to that spacey, ethereal realm that the pair had previously established. But the production sounds more focused, singular and, in turn, more mesmerizing than ever. The abstract lyrics are still the catalyst for Purity Ring’s music (“I built a constellation lair/out of the moles that hovered there”), but Roddick’s glassy synth arrangement gives “Push Pull” a real sense of wonder. Purity Ring’s sophomore effort is out in 2015 on 4AD. (via Stereogum)
