Those that are familiar with 26-year-old Will Phillips, a.k.a Tourist, know how patient a producer he is. Averse to the types of EDM and house that instantly gratify with an opening rush of synths, or bombardment of bass drops, Tourist is a master of the steady buildup. That observation is made clear on strikingly well-done remixes, like London Grammar’s “Sights” or Chvrches “Lies“, and singles like the majestic, Will Heard-featuring “I Can’t Keep Up“.
With “Wait”, Tourist’s newest offering, we get to hear a more experimental side of the London producer, as he dabbles with voice distortion and post-dubstep nuances. Yet the effect is still the same, as the track bubbles up until the final minute-and-a-half, boiling over into a fixed fit of euphoria only to end just as the instrumental seems it’s about to burst. As a signee to Disclosure‘s Method label, Phillips has probably taken a few notes from the Lawrence Brothers on what it takes to be successful. Tracks like “Wait” only help further his cause.
