Now Playing: Tunji Ige feat. Michael Christmas & iLoveMakonnen, “Day2Day” (Remix)

Despite it whoring itself out to the major record labels at large, Soundcloud can still be a wonderful thing on occasion. Every now and then, the music-based social media site yields absolute gems, and Tunji Ige‘s remix of his song “Day2Day” is one of them.

Featuring Boston emcee Michael Christmas, and newly signed OVO artist iLoveMakonnen, 19-year-old Tunji Ige provides listeners with a masterful balancing act in “Day2Day”: one-half cool summer jam, the other a pulsating house-rap hybrid. All three artists sound comfortably at ease while reeling off rhymes in their individual schemes, their respective daily grind routines recounted through differing styles. Yet each of them manages to impress by said singularity; Christmas with his casual, devil-may-care inflection, Ige with his frenetically elastic flow, and Makonnen’s familiar crooning over a lively techno background. Also, you have to love the sampling of King Krule’s “Cementality” during the bridge.
