Ariana Grande might not ever completely shake off that kiddy, bubblegum pop label people were so quick to place onto her earlier in her career. But with her latest album, My Everything, the budding superstar proved to be a lot more than just another Mariah Carey clone, as the 21-year-old singer was able to explore a nuanced sound of her own.
“Love Me Harder” is definitely Grande’s most overtly explicit song, mostly due to a great feature from The Weeknd, who finds himself in overly familiar territory. While it’s still completely sex-driven, it was refreshing to hear Tesfaye take a lighter, slightly more subtle approach to love, as he meshes surprisingly well with a softer singer in his midst. The video itself breaks no barriers as far as visuals are concerned, yet director Hannah Lux Davis‘ centered focus on the pair still provides the proper atmosphere for such an intimate song.
